Getting a job is always a difficult process. That is, even when you have a lot of experience and contacts, you will have to knock on many doors and do many interviews to get the job that provides economic and social benefits.
Imagine the case of those with little or no experience.
Young people tend to have it tougher (and even tougher in today’s times), so you have to exploit all the skills you have. How do you get a job with no experience? There is no fixed formula, but here are just a few tips that can help you.
1.- Go for the entry
points
What are
entry-level positions? They are those jobs where people generally start working
in organizations. Jobs that will never require years of experience (sometimes
none at all) for applicants to get.
There are
plenty of these positions on the market, so you probably won’t have a hard time
getting one. Entry-level positions will give you work experience, as well as
the chance to enter an industry and grow professionally over time.
2.- Tailored resume
It is a big
mistake to prepare a single resume and send it to all the places you want to
try your luck. Obviously, whether you get hired depends on how much you stand
out from other job applicants. However, not all jobs require the same skills.
You should
have a «base» resume, to which you can add or subtract professional
or educational aspects that will affect your evaluation. It is a simple
recommendation that puts you closer to a job when you have little or no
experience in the job field.
3.-Education is necessary
But
education does not necessarily have to be understood as attending a prestigious
university or college. That is, if it’s what you want and you can do it, it’s a
great idea. However, if you want to get a job quickly you have to look for
training options that are less time consuming.
Do some
practical training, get a certificate or diploma and above all acquire skills
that are compatible with your future job aspirations. Self-education is also
possible, so there is no excuse for not acquiring new knowledge or skills.
4.- Cultivate a network of
contacts
Let’s be
honest, in most cases our first jobs were obtained through the action of a
friend or acquaintance who helped us. Entering a company or organization and
training in the work field often requires that someone inside helps us.
Work on
your contacts, cultivate a good network of them and make friends (or at least
acquaintances) with many people. You certainly don’t even imagine where help
can come from. But you have to be prepared, have an updated resume with you, a
good LinkedIn profile and make sure you tell everyone what you do and what
projects you develop.
5.- Gain some experience
with internships or training grants
Organizations
know that younger staff need to be trained so some have internships or training
grants for this purpose.
Of course,
it is likely that in some cases you will receive no pay or basic pay. However,
we believe it is a small price to pay for the knowledge you acquire and will
most likely earn you a good living in your own or a similar organization.
6.- Prepare your
interviews
Imagine
that you have already followed the recommendations we left you and that you got
a job interview, either by video call or face to face. One of the main
shortcomings of those who have no work experience has to do with their
performance in interviews.
Prepare for
your interviews, reflect on yourself, your strengths and weaknesses so you can
present yourself confidently in front of your interviewer. Check out the web
and get your hands on frequently asked questions that are often asked in job
interviews. Preparing for an interview is absolutely essential when you are
looking for your first job.
7.- Just be patient
The
patience you have to have can be interpreted in an active way. That is, apply
everywhere you think and want to try your luck working. You don’t have to stop
actively looking for work, directly and through contacts that can help you.
However,
keep the peace of mind in knowing that you will get one of the jobs in the
future. The jobs that are usually filled in the first jobs always have
openings, so in the near future you will get a good job for yourself.
